Layering Guide - Extreme Cold Weather Clothing System

The ECWCS Guide

After dealing with four days in a row of temps below 20 degrees, it got me thinking about the ECWCS system... what is ECWCS you ask, well, it's the military's Extended Cold Weather Clothing System. This seven-layer system is utilized by soldiers during extremely cold conditions and harsh winter weather, keeping them dry, warm, and protected when it means the most. In addition to our collection of ECWCS clothing and gear, this layering system can be replicated through our winter apparel and accessories as well.

The Base Layer

The first two layers of ECWCS consists of Level I (Lightweight Underwear Tops & Bottoms) and Level II (Midweight Underwear Tops & Bottoms). Both layers are designed to be worn against the skin, allowing moisture wicking material to move sweat away from your body, keeping you cool and comfortable. Depending on your personal prefrence or weather conditions, you may wear only one or both layers together.

The Mid Layer

Continuing with the Extended Cold Weather Clothing System, the next two layers are Level III (Fleece Jacket) and Level IV (Wind Jacket). As the literal middle piece of this system, the Fleece Jacket provides essential warmth and insulation while remaining breathable and lightweight for maintaining mobility. On top of that, the Wind Jacket offers a layer of protection against wind and rain, keeping you dry.

The Outer Layer

As for the remaining three layers, there is Level V (Soft Shell Jacket & Pants), Level VI (Hard Shell Jacket & Pants), and Level VII (Parka Coat & Pants). The Soft Shell layer continues with moisture wicking and insulation, ensuring you remain warm and dry while allowing you to move freely without bulk. The last two layers, Hard Shell and Parka, further enhance protection against extreme cold and wet weather.
